Dog Desexing
In Victoria, the general guideline is to desex small dogs between seven and 12 months of age, while larger dogs are typically desexed between 10 months and two years, based on their breed, sex, and any existing health conditions.
Desexing Options
Male Dogs
- Permanent Surgical Desexing (Castration): A permanent solution that involves surgically removing the testicles.
- Temporary Contraception (Suprelorin): An implant providing temporary contraception, which allows you to monitor behavioural changes before opting for surgery.
Female Dogs
- Spaying: The removal of the ovaries and uterus through surgery.
Benefits of Desexing
Desexing your canine companion helps manage the pet population while offering significant health and behavioural benefits. Additionally, it qualifies you for discounts on council pet registration fees throughout your dog’s life.
Health Benefits
Female Dogs (Spaying)
- Lowers the risk of mammary tumours
- Completely removes the risk of ovarian and uterine tumours
- Prevents pyometra, a potentially life-threatening uterine infection
Male Dogs (Neutering)
- Reduces the likelihood of prostatic diseases
- Decreases the risk of perianal tumours
- Eliminates the risk of testicular cancer
- Helps control unwanted behaviours like marking, aggression, and roaming
Male Dogs (Suprelorin Implant)
- A non-invasive method that addresses prostate and testicular issues
- Does not interfere with the growth or development of large-breed dogs

Have taken both of my dogs here since they were puppiesPosted on Serena “Samillow” De JongTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have many lovely things to say about this clinic but I'll start by saying, I never fully settled on a family vet. Because I am particular but after this traumatic week I am settled on them and will take my other pets here from here on out, and here's why; My dog (2 years old), woke a few days ago in immense pain and was taken to an emergency vet who offered possibly the worst ever care I've experienced. When she awoke the following morning significantly worse it was recommended to me by a family member to call here, (Whilst we had visited here before we weren't completely settled on this clinic) So, I contacted them immediately they managed to squeeze my baby in for immediate care despite not having an appointment. They admitted her in for imaging and called me with an update later in the day. Once we came back in we were given the unfortunate and shocking (not only to us but the vet aswell) news that she was not well at all and we were facing a grim outcome. You never expect to hear this especially in a dog of 2 years old. I of course was absolutely hysterical but Dr. Nina was so gentle, patient and understanding. She gave us all the time we needed, even waiting until my Dad arrived to move forward with anything. Nothing was rushed and everything was truely peaceful for my little angels last moments. Nursing staff were also incredibly caring and gentle. You won't understand until you're in this predicament, but this level of care, at the end of the day, is what will make or break you. I do not think I would be able to function at this moment without the care and support we received from this clinic. Thank you guys, for taking care of my baby in her last moments, thank you for taking care of us all. ❤️ Rest in peace Little Edie ❤️Posted on J STrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Absolutely amazing in every way. We had to put my dog down and they waited after they closed so my whole family to come and say goodbye. Could not speak higher of them, thank you so muchVerified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
